Large Victorian silver mazer punch bowl & matching goblets
9447
Late-Victorian punch bowl set comprising six punch goblets, a punch bowl, and a ladle. The bowl's style and construction are referred to as a mazer, a special type of wooden drinking vessel, a wide cup or shallow bowl without handles.
The goblets mirror the mazer style with turned walnut wood bowls and decorative silver mounts. Each piece of the set and hand-forged silver ladle is in fine and original condition.
The term mazer is a derivative of the German word masa (a spot), which refers to the birdseye maple from which mazers were originally made. They vary from simple all-wood pieces to those, like this example, ornamented with silver or silver gilt. The silver rim was ripe for an inscription, religious or bacchanalian.
The dimensions given are for the mazer bowl. The goblets are 3¾" (95mm) tall and 4¾" (120mm) diameter.
