Good quality Victorian sterling silver beaker, made in 1880 in the style of a George I tumbler cup that would have been popular in the early part of the 18th century. It has a satisfyingly heavy feel and slightly flattened bottom for stability. Its simplicity makes it perfect for engraving and would make a lovely christening gift for a boy or girl.

Silver tumbler cups originated in the 17th century and gained popularity in the UK and America. They were designed with a thickened, rounded base to allow them to rock back up if knocked over, a practical feature especially when travelling in stagecoaches with their rolling action and from which the name tumbler derives. Tumbler cups continue to be popular for drinking and also as gifts.
