Single antique Portuguese silver candlestick, made in the early 19th century and mounted on four leaf and claw feet. From 1690 the compulsory Portuguese hallmarking system was introduced and the silver fineness was expressed in dinheiros - 11 (916/1000) or 10.6 (854/1000).

During the 15th and 16th centuries, the Portuguese dominated the seas and were busy discovering new worlds previously unknown to Europeans. Against this backdrop and with burgeoning prosperity, the silversmiths employed the motifs and decorations influenced by these amazing journeys in their work; battle scenes, fighting with savage Indians, and even fantastic animals in the midst of unusual flora.
