Charming pair of antique sterling silver candlesticks in the neoclassical style made at the end of the Edwardian era in 1909. The candlesticks display the typical styling of neoclassical style with tapering stems and bases adorned with bellflower swags, ribbons and sections of fluting; decorations which are repeated on the capitals. The decorations are all classic motifs of the neoclassical era which reached its peak in the early-to-mid-19th century.
Neoclassicism emerged as a Western cultural movement in the decorative and visual arts, literature, theatre, music, and architecture that drew inspiration from the art and culture of classical antiquity. Born in Rome, its popularity expanded throughout Europe as a generation of European art students finished their Grand Tour and returned from Italy to their home countries with newly rediscovered Greco-Roman ideals.
