Pair neoclassical style silver candelabra

Pair neoclassical style silver candelabra

Sold

Pair of silver candelabra in the neoclassical style in a design that would have been typical of the late 1700s. The bases, stems and sconces are all elegantly pannelled while the sinuous arms are ribbed. The arms are removable to leave a fine pair of single candlesticks and the nozzles are all detachable to aid cleaning.

Unlike the majestic, showy forms of baroque or the exuberant rococo, or the sumptuous style of London's Paul de Lamerie, neoclassicism encouraged restrained dignity and elegance. The sculptural nature of the style lent itself to media such as silver, with which craftsmen could readily shape figural and ornamental elements.
