Fine pair of antique French wine jugs with ovoid hand-blown glass bodies cut with vertical fluting. The mounts are 1st quality French silver (950 standard) and feature decorated strapwork fluting and cast floral garlands interspersed with graduated bellflower swags. Bands of acanthus leaves cradle the bodies, and grape, flower, and leaf finials surmount the gilt-lined hinged covers.

An antique claret jug is perfect for serving and appreciating red wine. France produced many fine silver and glass wine jugs; this pair is no exception. Each wine jug holds a full 750ml bottle of your favourite red.

Although the word claret has its roots in French, meaning clear or bright, claret is the British name for French red Bordeaux wine and other reds.

While glass was used for drinking vessels since the earliest times, the claret jug was developed only in the 19th century. Since clarity is key when serving and drinking red wine, the jug shape was perfect for decanting wine and leaving the sediment in the bottle; it also exposed the wine to the air to breathe, allowing the flavours to develop. Meanwhile, the glass body of a claret jug allows the clarity and density of the wine's colour to be seen clearly. The density of colour gives clues to whether a wine is a lighter style or full-bodied.
