7305
Antique silver-gilt tea caddy with matching caddy spoon, each of exceptionally good quality and finely chased to reflect Moorish design that was so popular in the Victorian era. The caddy is hand chased with decorations that reflect that Moorish influence and personified in the style of the foliage within panels around the body and rim. The cover, with its raised centre is decorated with overlapping laurel leaves and surmounted by a closed leaf finial. The caddy spoon is equally finely chased.
Personified by its elaborate ornamentation, and drawn from historical sources beyond familiar classical and Gothic modes, Moorish design was a highly popular exotic revival style adopted in Europe and the Americas and reaching its height of popularity after the mid-19th century. It was part of a widening vocabulary of articulated decorative ornament.
