Boxed pair of Edwardian silver shell salts

Boxed pair of Edwardian silver shell salts

Sold

Lovely pair of Edwardian sterling silver shell salts with scrolled, shell-like, thumbpieces and each sitting upon three balled feet. The interiors of these antique salts are gilded and accompanied by their original, gilt-lined silver spoons with knop finials. All are presented in their original burgundy velvet-lined box.

Since early Greek and Roman times, and during the Middle Ages, salt was expensive and silver salt cellars evolved and placed on the table as a sign of status and prosperity. Usually made of silver, they were often decorated in motifs of the sea.
