Pair Victorian silver butter shells

Pair Victorian silver butter shells

Sold

Pretty pair of antique silver butter dishes in the form of scallop shells, each with three cast shell feet.

An understated type of butter dish is the silver butter shell. Silver butter shells have been crafted since the early 18th century and were realistically modelled on scallop shells usually sitting on three supports and, like this pair, the supports were often crafted as scallop, cockle or whelk shells.

Of course, these delightful silver shells do not need to be confined to serving butter and can be used to serve a range of condiments or snacks.
