Set four Victorian silver salts

Set four Victorian silver salts

Sold

A good set of four antique sterling silver salt cellars with beautiful hand-chased floral decoration and gadroon borders. Each salt is mounted on three lion mask and paw feet and is gold-plated inside to protect from the salt. These are accompanied by four gilded 'Kings' pattern salt spoons made by William Chawner of London in 1827.

Since early Greek and Roman times, and during the Middle Ages, salt was expensive and silver salt cellars evolved and placed on the table as a sign of status and prosperity. Usually made of silver, they were often decorated in motifs of the sea.
