Set of four Edwardian cast and hand chased silver salt cellars made in the form of scallop shells. The interiors are nicely gilded and each shell is accompanied by a matching scalloped salt spoon, with a similarly gilded bowl.
Scallop shells have long been crafted in silver, frequently appearing on the dining table in the form of salts like these, or butter shells, and realistically modelled on real scallop shells. They usually sit on three supports which in turn were often crafted as scallop, cockle or whelk shells.
Interestingly, the seashell, especially the scallop, is the symbol of baptism in Christianity.
