Rare antique silver tortoise table bell

Rare antique silver tortoise table bell

Sold

A superb quality, silver table bell from in the form of a tortoise and made in the late Victorian era. This silver tortoise model is rare in that the shell and the underside, tail and head are all solid silver and each silver part is cast and hand-chased in fine detail. There is evidence that the shell was originally gilded; there is a light veil of gold remaining.

The bell and wind-up mechanism are brass and original to the piece, and the bell has lovely ring, produced when pressing either the head or the tail.

Joseph Braham was a 19th century London silversmith who enjoyed and specialised in making unusual pieces in silver.
