Massive antique silver nef galleon

Massive antique silver nef galleon

Sold

This hugely impressive sterling silver model ship, also known as a nef, was made in Germany by Berthold Müller and bears import hallmarks for Chester 1909.

Based on a stylised 16th century galleon, and made in exceptional detail with three fully rigged masts and sails, this ship is mounted, in the traditional manner, on four cast wheels with mask and sunburst hubs. The hull is hand-chased to represent the planked wood and has 16 open gun holes with cannon barrels protruding.

Below the bowsprit is a figurehead of a mermaid holding an heraldic cartouche. The removable deck section has numerous figures of sailors in the throes of battle with further figures climbing the rigging. Further details include two large lanterns and a separate anchor held by chains.

All parts of this incredible centrepiece are hallmarked with import hallmarks.
