This beautifully modelled late-20th-century silver African elephant, made in Germany, is standing in a lively pose with trunk outstretched and fine silver tusks. Its body is nicely textured to give a natural hide-like quality. German silversmiths have a long and renowned tradition for making animal models. This is an excellent example of their craft and bears sterling silver import hallmarks for 2017.

Many African cultures revere the African elephant as a symbol of strength and power. It is also praised for its size, longevity, stamina, mental faculties, cooperative spirit and loyalty. In African folklore and fables, the African elephant is seen as the wise chief who impartially settles disputes among the forest creatures, and the Ashanti tradition holds that they are human chiefs from the past.
