School of Aeronautical Engineering

Langfords was commissioned by The School of Aeronautical Engineering to create a fitting centrepiece for the newly built officers' mess in the name of Sgt Wally Harris.

Sgt Harris served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and saved countless lives in the Light Aid Detachment and B Echelon, when he drove his jeep into an exposed position under heavy enemy fire from German gunners preparing an ambush in the aftermath of D-Day in 1944.

Inscription reads:

The Harris MM Warrant Officers' & Sergeants' Mess

Wally was given a full military funeral in 2014 when he died aged 93.
