HMS Anson silver centrepiece

HMS Anson silver centrepiece

This is an example of a bespoke commission for the Royal Navy. A tradition passed down the centuries is to have a silver centrepiece made to commemorate the launch of a new ship of the line.

The centrepiece usually takes the form of an image taken from the Ship's crest. Royal Navy ships are named after a predecessor, and often in alphabetical order. In this case, both officers and enlisted personnel were asked for their input, and the resulting centrepiece was brought to life from sketches provided by members of the crew. The design is a departure from the original concept; the ship's crest is a crown set in the waves.
