Impressive pair of silver-gilt salts

Impressive pair of silver-gilt salts

Sold

Pair of large and impressive silver-gilt salt cellars of substantial weight and quality. Made in the style of Paul de Lamerie circa 1730, they are made in the form of miniature wine cisterns. The salts are accompanied by a pair of matching silver Queen's pattern salt spoons with gilded bowls.

Since early Greek and Roman times, and during the Middle Ages, salt was expensive and silver salt cellars evolved and placed on the table as a sign of status and prosperity. Usually made of silver, they were often decorated in motifs of the sea.
