Niello-decorated Art Deco silver canister

Niello-decorated Art Deco silver canister

Sold

Fine and unusual sterling silver canister made by the celebrated designer and silversmith Henry George Murphy of London in 1930.

This round box has applied bands of barrel reeding, with geometric niello decoration to the lid, a decorative technique for which Murphy was known. The box lid is surmounted by a hexagonal band of silver edged with an applied slanted decoration and each face decorated with seven gilded beads and fitted with a tapered hexagonal cut glass finial. All in all, this is a particularly attractive example of his work.

The hallmark has the additional motif mark of a falcon in reference to the name of his business - Falcon Studio.

During his thirty years career, Murphy produced silver and jewellery in both the Arts & Crafts and Art Deco styles, taking inspiration from Scandinavian designers such as Georg Jensen, and this influence can be seen in the clean lines of his late silver work.
