Made in the early 19th century, this is a striking and unusual silver-gilt dessert and fruit cutlery set for 12 settings, featuring agate handles in an assortment of complementary hues. The agate from which the handles are crafted has clearly been carefully selected so that each pair is different in colour to the others. The set of agate-handled fruit knives and forks is completed by 12 hand-forged silver-gilt tablespoons and dessert spoons in the Hourglass pattern to complete a varied and beautiful dinner table setting.

This early-19th-century dessert or fruit eating set is presented in a bespoke felt-lined wooden canteen with brass fittings and comprises:

12 knives with agate handles, by Sydenham William Peppin, London 1816
12 fruit forks with agate handles, by Richard Pearce, London 1827
12 Hourglass pattern tablespoons, by Eley & Fearn, London 1817
