Pair George III Adam-style silver sauce tureens
Pair George III Adam-style silver sauce tureens
2155
This beautiful pair of George III boat-shaped silver sauce tureens, made in 1785, are of oval form with elegant reeded loop handles. The rim, foot and finial of each tureen features fine bead pattern mounts that are typical of this period, and the bodies are engraved with a family coat-of-arms with corresponding crest on the lids.
While some vessels have been identified as being used for sauces since ancient times, the modern fashion for sauce boats probably derived from fashion in the late 17th century French court, and the thermal properties of silver make it superior to porcelain or glass for keeping the sauce or gravy warm.
