Set of Victorian hand-forged Prince's antique silver cutlery for 24 in canteen
Set of Victorian hand-forged Prince's antique silver cutlery for 24 in canteen
2655
Made by one of the best cutlery makers of the mid-Victorian era, this is a comprehensive and elegant set of antique hand-forged and double-struck silver cutlery set in the Prince's pattern for 24 people, all fitted in its original wooden canteen. The dies for Prince's pattern were first produced around 1860 when the pattern was known as Princess No 1, and its simple scroll and leaf border is typical of the mid-Victorian style.
Double-struck indicates that the design is struck on the front and back of each piece, requiring a heavier gauge of silver and therefore a sign of superior quality.
This fine silver cutlery service was made by Francis Higgins II of London, 1876-1878 unless otherwise indicated, and comprises:
24 table forks
24 dessert forks
24 dessert spoons
24 tablespoons (12 x George Adams, 1873)
1 soup ladle
2 gravy spoons
4 sauce ladles
4 salt ladles
4 salt cellars (Richards & Brown 1877 & 1878)
Since antique knives rarely survive, this fine silver cutlery set is completed with 24 modern matching silver table knives and 36 dessert knives in the Prince's pattern, with stainless steel blades, making them suitable for putting in the dishwasher.
