Large oblong Old Sheffield Plate plateau

Large oblong Old Sheffield Plate plateau

Sold

From the King William IV era, this is a superb quality rectangular Old Sheffield Plate plateau in fine and original condition. The inverted sides have an applied egg and dart border as well as a finely detailed rim decorated with slot gadroon vine and grapes, foliage and flowers. The supports resemble scrolling flutes and are of openwork construction.

The name Old Sheffield Plate can only properly be attributed to one particular kind of silver plate. Old Sheffield Plate was made in a fusion process in the late 18th and early 19th century, before the invention of electroplating that we are familiar with today.
