Art Nouveau silver jewel box

Art Nouveau silver jewel box

Sold

An Edwardian antique silver jewel box lined with dark blue velvet and piping. The box rests on fanned flute pattern supports and has a hand chased lid decorated with a heart-shaped panel, a quiver, floral work and scrolls in an Art Nouveau style.

The Art Nouveau style was often inspired by natural forms such as the sinuous curves of plants and flowers; a sense of dynamism and movement. One major objective of art nouveau was to break down the traditional distinction between fine arts and applied arts, so it was widely used in interior design, jewellery and metal work. In Britain, it was influenced by William Morris and the Arts & Crafts movement.
