American sterling silver cocktail shaker

American sterling silver cocktail shaker

Sold

This amazing cocktail shaker is made in heavy gauge sterling silver with detail based on Norse or Viking motifs. The body is hand-chased with scenes of spears and fishes swimming amongst the waves, with seashells below. There is a band of applied Viking shields around the shoulder, with a cast dolphin finial on the lid. The dragon- or hound-head handles (based on the figureheads of the Viking longboats) are in fact pouring spouts that can be sealed shut, when shaking, by rotating them through 45 degrees. It is an ingenious mechanism that due to the excellent engineering has a very precise and satisfying feel when operated.

It has the name "CAPRONIA" in bas-relief on one side of the collar. The history of this is unknown but we believe it was made for a yacht by that name.

The underside is engraved with the capacity - 4½ pints.

It is a very impressive weight, 55 Troy oz (1389g), and stands 14½ inches (37cm) tall.
