Classic Victorian glass & silver wine jug

Classic Victorian glass & silver wine jug

Sold

Mid-Victorian antique wine jug with handblown glass body and decorative silver mounts. The glass body is delicately engraved with floral garlands, ribbons, swags and ferns around the upper body, while a band of floral work and foliage decorates the lower half. The underside of the glass base is hand-cut with a starburst.

Showing evidence of its original gilding, this antique wine jug is fitted with a silver collar, handle, girdle and hinged cover, and medieval masks decorate the base of the handle and spout, while the collar and cover are hand chased. The handle is chased to resemble bark and two applied and finely chased sun masks decorate each side of the silver mount, with the cover featuring a fine acanthus leaf pattern edge surmounted by a rampant lion and shield thumbpiece.
