5-piece Louis pattern silver tea & coffee set

5-piece Louis pattern silver tea & coffee set

Sold

A superb quality antique silver five-piece Louis pattern silver tea and coffee service comprising a kettle on its stand and fitted with a burner, a teapot, coffee pot, milk jug and sugar bowl. The latter two pieces have gilded interiors. The kettle pivots forward by means of releasing a pin at the rear of the stand.

Each piece is hand chased in fine detail with an abundance of floral work, foliage, scrolls and sections of scales. One of the two cartouches on each piece has an as-yet-untraced family crest engraved within.

The kettle, tea and coffee pots have cast finials in the form of eagles, and cast spouts adorned with scrolls, leaves and beading.

The kettle stand has a cast apron between each support incorporating a profusion of finely detailed foliage and floral work. The other pieces of the set have cast scroll shaped supports surmounted by classical Roman masks depicting the sun God, an association with Louis XIV of France, also known as Louis the Great (Louis le Grand) or the Sun King (le Roi Soleil) , thereby giving this popular design of set its name.

The heights of each piece:
Kettle 430mm (17")
Coffee pot 265mm (10½")
Teapot 185mm (7¼")
Milk jug 115mm (4½")
Sugar bowl 110 mm (4¼")
