Classic, Adam-style, antique silver-gilt sugar basket with boat-shaped body and mounted on a spreading oval base. Reflecting the necoclassical style that was so popular in the 18th century, there is a panel of pierced vertical fluting below the rim and an engraved oval shield on either side of the piece, plus an engraved starburst at either end. The swing handle, base and rim of the bowl have applied thread pattern mounts.

This is of a superior quality to most of the sugar baskets made during this period and in a heavier gauge of silver.
