Pair of Victorian silver salts

Pair of Victorian silver salts

Sold

Wonderfully heavy quality pair of Victorian silver salt cellars in the George II style. These circular salts have shallow circular bowls with applied acanthus leaf decoration; recreations of a design by the famous 18th century silversmith, Paul De Lamerie.

Since early Greek and Roman times, and during the Middle Ages, salt was expensive and silver salt cellars evolved and placed on the table as a sign of status and prosperity. Usually made of silver, they were often decorated in motifs of the sea.
