Silver vinaigrette & scent horn
3375
This unusual collector's piece is a combined silver vinaigrette and scent hunting horn. The vinaigrette is at the wide end and a screw-cap perfume bottle at the narrow end.
During the 19th century many also believed that pleasant smells would protect them from disease. A vinaigrette was therefore a fashionable accessory for the middle classes; a container with a filigree cover used to hold a perfume-soaked sponge or piece of cotton to disguise unpleasant smells.
Like this silver vinaigrette example, many were fitted with silver chains that could be attached to a chatelaine or jewellery was worn by ladies during the Victorian era to mask unpleasant odours in their environments
