Early 20th century cased set of antique butt markers sitting in a central sprung panel of eight cylinders in a frosted, gilt-lined silver case. Each cylinder holds a numbered cow bone butt marker and the cover of the silver box is engraved Aldourie Aug 1919.

Aldourie is an historic 300-year-old baronial castle and estate on the banks of the Loch Ness and this piece could have been the property of Major Neil Fraser-Tytler of Aldourie and Balnain, who won a DSO and Bar with the Royal Field Artillery (RFA) during the Great War. He married Christian Helen Shairp (CBE) in 1919 so it may have been a gift from his wife in commemoration of their marriage.

Today, Aldourie is owned today by Anders Holch Povlsen.

Butt markers are used to help choose the first shooting position to start from in a game shoot, with shooters taking turns to choose a peg inserted into the sheath to reveal their number position on the first drive. They are often shaped like Vesta cases or cartridges, and contain up to ten pegs made from either bone or ivory. Many shooters today are taking an interest in antique silver butt markers.
