This traditional silver ciborium has a gold-plated finish. The round base has an openwork border and rises in panelled sections to a hexagonal knopped stem. The central knop is inset with six cabochon garnets. The lid on the simple round cup has a cross finial, also inset with cabochon garnets on either side.

A ciborium is a vessel, normally in metal. It was originally a particular shape of drinking cup in Ancient Greece and Rome, but the word later came to refer to a large covered cup designed to hold hosts for, and after, the Eucharist, thus the counterpart of the chalice.
