Victorian naturalistic sterling silver inkstand
Victorian naturalistic sterling silver inkstand
10267
This wonderful and unusual inkstand, made in sterling silver by the Fox family in 1852, is a wonderful example of Victorian naturalistic design. The round base is beautifully hand-chased with water lily pads on a textured pond-effect background, with a central stylised lily bloom rising from the centre to hold the inkwell itself. On one side there is a small bud with an open top to hold a pen or quill. A figure of a newt rests on one of the leaves to complete this charming pond setting.
Victorian designers loved naturalistic themes, and water lilies were especially popular because they combined elegance with symbolism - purity, tranquility, and nature. This is a beautiful example of the genre, and exceptional quality.
