An impressive antique American silver vase, decorated with fine quality hand chased vine patterns as well as cast vines forming the two looped handles, and cast and applied vine pattern supports around the base. There are open sections on either side, suitable for engraving.
New York City silversmith, Robert Rait arrived in the city from Edinburgh, Scotland in 1833 and established himself as a silversmith, jeweller and retailer (1835-1855). Among other things, he is known to have provided police badges under contract to the city and his mark is found in conjunction with that of other makers and retailers.
