Celtic silver quaich

Celtic silver quaich

Sold

As a traditional Scottish loving cup or cup of friendship, this is a nice example of a sterling silver quaich. The silver quaich features two cast lugs, each decorated with a woven Celtic pattern and inset with an amethyst and with its traditional symbolism makes an excellent gift.

Originating in the Scottish Highlands centuries ago, a quaich - or 'cuach' in the Gaelic - is a traditional Scottish shallow drinking cup with two or three lugs, most often used for drinking whisky.

Over time the quaich became the favourite drinking cup throughout Scotland, originally made from wood or horn. In the seventeenth century, silver quaichs started to appear - making the cups fancy enough to be used among the fashionable upper classes of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
