Antique silver-plated bread basket

Antique silver-plated bread basket

Sold

Pretty late-Victorian silver-plated bread or cake basket. This boat-shaped basket features fluted sides and a band of delicate hand-pierced decoration. Like most silver and silver-plated baskets and bowls, they can be used in whatever way the owner chooses.

The bread basket has a long history in England. Decorative oval or boat-shaped baskets used for bread were introduced during the reign of George II (1727-1760). These early bread baskets were quite heavy and as time went on the designs changed and the baskets became much lighter.
