Set of 12 antique, George III period silver dinner plates, made by Paul Storr, royal silversmith to King George III of England. The coat of arms as engraved on this suite of dinner plates show they were once the property of the Wyndham, Earl of Egremont.
With an interior diameter of 170mm (6½"), each plate features a finely detailed and decorative applied border. The design, in high relief, incorporates the French gadroon, leaf and shell pattern - a signature design of Paul Storr.
Each is hand-inscribed on the base: 5, 10, 16, 18, 22, 27, 32, 36, 53, 54, 80, 116
Given the date of manufacture, they were undoubtedly in the possession fo Sir George O'Brien Wyndham (1751-1837) the 3rd Earl of Egremont. George served as Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum (Justice of the Peace) and Vice Admiral of the County of Sussex wherin his principal sea of Petworth House is located. George was noted to having 15 mistresses during his lifetime and more than 40 illegitimate children!
