Pair of early Victorian antique silver salt cellars with circular melon fluted bodies, spreading circular bases and decorated with scroll and flowerhead borders. The interiors are beautifully gilded. Despite having gilded interiors, it's always best to empty wash and dry silver salt cellars after each use to avoid the salt pitting the silver.

Since early Greek and Roman times, and during the Middle Ages, salt was expensive and silver salt cellars evolved and placed on the table as a sign of status and prosperity. Usually made of silver, they were often decorated in motifs of the sea.
