An elegant, timeless and rare pair of square-cut Mystery ruby dress cufflinks and studs by Van Cleef & Arpels, finely crafted and set in 18k yellow gold.

The ruby stones are bright with purplish pink hues and each square component is invisibly set with calibré-cut square rubies. The cufflinks are signed Van Cleef & Arpels Brevete SGDG, numbered NY31699 and the three dress studs signed VCA NY and numbered 30801.

The Mystery technique was conceived by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1933 and is a technique used for setting gemstones in a specific way so that no prongs are visible and the gems appear to be entirely free-standing. Each faceted stone is gently placed onto thin gold rails measuring less than two-tenths of a millimetre wide and the design is so intricate that producing a single clip takes approximately 300 hours. The process is so complex making Mystery set pieces extremely rare.

Made in New York, each individual piece is signed Van Cleef & Arpels and appear to be hardly worn.

One of the world's foremost jewellery houses, Van Cleef & Arpels is particularly noted for a focus on technical virtuosity, craftsmanship and artistry, evident since its beginning. Rather than creating earrings, bracelets, necklaces and other adornments primarily for the aim of displaying of wealth and opulence, Van Cleef & Arpels sought to produce jewellery that projected the wearer's individual taste and style.
