Antique sterling silver model of a polo pony

Sold

Stunning antique sterling silver model of a polo pony in a standing pose and saddled up with his bridle and reins awaiting his rider. Sculpted by Gilbert Halliday in 1913, it was probably created as a portrait of a "best playing pony" at Hurlingham or Cowdray Park Championships. Halliday's skill for demonstrating the detail and musculature of the animal is evident. This amazing silver model has an alert and lifelike character, set on a textured silver ground and wooden plinth. The crisp hallmark and signature of the artist - G Halliday 1913 - are clearly seen.and the statue is signed by Halliday on the base.

The model was cast and hallmarked by Elkington & Co of Birmingham in 1913.
