Pair of Art Nouveau silver vases

Sold

Charming pair of Edwardian silver vases in the Art Nouveau style. The bodies are embossed with naturalistic swirling foliage and sections of poppy heads set against a mottled ground. The interiors are gilded.

Art Nouveau (c1880 to 1910) could be said to be the first 20th century modern style. It was the first style to stop looking backwards in history for ideas, taking inspiration instead from what it saw around it, in particular the natural world. The distinguishing ornamental characteristic of Art Nouveau is its undulating asymmetrical line, often taking the form of flower stalks and buds, vine tendrils, insect wings, and other delicate and sinuous natural objects.
