George III Onslow pattern silver soup ladle

George III Onslow pattern silver soup ladle

Sold

An early Onslow pattern silver soup ladle made by George Baskerville of London in 1763. It is a substantial example, with cast scroll end and scallop fluted bowl. A family crest of two bear paws is engraved in the bowl.

Sometimes known as scroll pattern, and first designed in this recognised form in about 1760, the Onslow pattern cutlery is said to have been named after Arthur Onslow (1691-1768)
The Great Speaker of Parliament. There is no evidence to support this idea and hence the name scroll is often used.
