3-tier silver smoker's box

3-tier silver smoker's box

Sold

An unusual sterling silver cigar box with three-tiered rectangular boxes. The bottom box is for holding cigars, the middle tier for cigarettes and the top for matches. As was traditional, the bottom box is lined with cedarwood to keep the cigars fresh and the lid is gilt lined. The other two tiers feature spring-loaded and gilt lined lids. The top tier features a steel match-striking strip applied to the front.

This wonderful handmade silver box bears French import marks rather than English hallmarks but was probably made in London circa 1900 and exported directly to France. It would make a perfect desk box for pens and other accoutrements.
