Silver-mounted Royal Doulton stoneware biscuit barrel
Silver-mounted Royal Doulton stoneware biscuit barrel
9104
Charming and colourful Art Nouveau Royal Doulton glazed stoneware jar and pull-off cover, fitted with decorative, hand-hammered sterling silver bands and finial. The addition of silver elevates this lovely jar and we have not see another Royal Doulton stoneware example elaborated in this way. Aside from being decorative, the silver bands also protect the jar from chips.
The cylindrical jar's glazed body is decorated in a high Art Nouveau manner, featuring a band of blue stylised flower heads - probably lilies - and sinuous scrolling stems set against a blue/green ground. The brown lid is nicely ribbed and the base features an impressed Royal Doulton (England) mark and the artist's monogram - A L.
Originally marketed as a tobacco jar, it is multifunctional and a useful size for keeping biscuits or sweets, or could be used as a desk or dressing table tidy.
