This antique silver wine ewer of German origin is of considerable size and a magnificent weight. The decorations, both hand chased and cast, are finely detailed and of exceptional quality. The marks show the wine jug as being '13' standard silver which approximately equates to the continental .800 standard and the silver jug also bears a French import mark.

Silver standards refer to the millesimal fineness for the silver alloy used in the making of silver objects.  This list is organised from highest to lowest millesimal fineness, or purity of the silver.

The 800 silver standard is where the alloy is 80% pure silver and 20% copper or other metals and this silver standard has been used by many European countries including Germany and Italy.  In 1999 European Union laws were changed and harmonised so that hallmarks from other member countries are now legally recognised in the UK.
