Large Indian colonial silver cigar box

Large Indian colonial silver cigar box

Sold

Most impressive handmade silver cigar box that would also be suitable as a desk box. Mounted on four cast scroll and leaf supports, the body and cover are decorated with acanthus leaf borders.

The central cast and applied panel on the lid has been crafted in fine detail and relief, and presumably represents the building that housed the Imperial Department of Commerce & Industry in Calcutta.

The inscription on the fascia reads:

Presented to A Orr Dens Esq
by
The Indian Mercantile Community of Calcutta
5th March 1948

The interior is lined with traditional cedarwood to keep the cigars fresh, and the inside of the lid is gilded.

This is a fine box and great presentation piece.
