Striking Victorian three-piece, silver-gilt tea set with matched tray and teaspoons. This beautifully made antique silver tea set has a frosted gilt finish and is delicately hand-engraved with geometric bands of decoration, swags and garlands, and the teaspoons are similarly decorated.

Each piece features applied bead pattern mounts and the tray has an openwork flared lip which has been hand chased with ribbons, bellflower garlands and ovoid shields each decorated with a flowerhead. The handle and detachable finial are ivory and the tea set is fitted in its original lockable presentation case.

Silver-gilt or gilded/gilt silver, sometimes known in American English by the French term vermeil, is silver which has been gilded with gold. Most large objects made that appear to be gold are actually silver-gilt. For example, most sporting trophies (including Olympic gold medals) and many crown jewels are silver-gilt objects.

Dimensions given are for the teapot. The oval silver gilt tea tray is 380mm x 275mm (15" x 11").

Note: Under the rules of the UK government's Ivory Act 2018, this antique tea set qualifies for an ivory exemption certificate.  If required, the ivory parts may be replicated and replaced with an ivory substitute at no additional cost.
