Victorian silver gravy or sauce boat
Victorian silver gravy or sauce boat
7409
Pretty antique silver gravy boat on three legs with hand-chased fluting to the body. This late Victorian sauce boat features a cast leaf-cap scroll handle and is hand engraved with a family crest of a man in armour.
While some vessels have been identified as being used for sauces since ancient times, the modern fashion for sauce boats probably derived from fashion in the late 17th century French court, and the thermal properties of silver make it superior to porcelain or glass for keeping the sauce or gravy warm.
