Silver sauce or gravy boat
Silver sauce or gravy boat
Made by George Hart for the Guild of Handicrafts, this is a modern, hand-raised silver sauce or gravy boat with hammered finish, decorated with an applied bead pattern border around the rim. The handle has a decorative thumbpiece in the form a let-in oval cabochon green stone.
While some vessels have been identified as being used for sauces since ancient times, the modern fashion for sauce boats probably derived from fashion in the late 17th century French court, and
the thermal properties of silver make it superior to porcelain or glass for keeping the sauce or gravy warm.
