Silver mounted Hoggit with HMS Victory wood
Unique HMS Victory wooden hoggit (or hoggett) carved out to hold our solid silver bowl and fitted with a hand-blown Dartington crystal decanter and stopper. We have fitted a silver collar to the neck which is suitable for engraving, as is the silver bowl.
This timber was acquired from the store of the 1905 refit of HMS Victory, authenticated by curators at the National Museum of the Royal Navy and accompanied by a certificate endorsing its authenticity. Other than waxing the wood, we have left it entirely as it came from the ship and we have attached a silver plaque to the underside inscribed with the certificate number details of its authenticity.
Throughout the history of wine, decanters have played a significant role in the serving of wine. No more so is this tradition than the serving of Vintage Port. Rather more obscure and rare is the hoggit, a round-bottomed decanter that cannot be put down unless resting on its wooden base, thus ensuring that guests cannot hog it and keep passing it round the table.
