An pair of George III silver salt cellars in the neoclassical style popular at the end of the 18th century. The elegant salts are boat -shaped with tapering oval bodies standing on pedestal bases, decorated with reeded rims and scroll handles at either end. The blue glass liners protect the silver from the salt.
Neoclassicism was born in Rome in the mid-18th century before spreading throughout Europe. It is the name given to Western movements in the arts and architecture that draw inspiration from the classical art and culture of Ancient Greece or Rome.
